3 Mastercard Foundation programs creating jobs for young women in Africa

Across Africa, several targeted programmes are creating clear pathways to economic opportunity, especially for young women. Through partnerships with organisations such as BRAC, MEDA, and WOFAN, these initiatives are designed around the real needs, aspirations, and challenges young people face. The focus is direct: equip them with skills, access to finance, and practical support to secure sustainable livelihoods and build stronger communities.

AIM

The AIM programme is focused on preparing young women for work and enterprise. So far, over 382,000 girls and women have received training in entrepreneurship, employability, and essential life skills. The programme is expanding its reach, with a clear goal to unlock work opportunities for at least 2 million more participants across different sectors.

Africa Growth Fund

The Africa Growth Fund targets the financing gap that limits business expansion. By supporting investment funds and growing businesses, it drives job creation at scale. So far, 454,336 direct and indirect jobs have been created, with strong emphasis on supporting women-led enterprises and improving access to capital.

ICON of Hope

ICON of Hope focuses on Nigeria’s agricultural value chain. It addresses structural barriers such as access to land, finance, time-saving tools, and markets. Already, 928,328 young women have been supported to access meaningful work, improving productivity and strengthening their economic position.
